What’s the difference between Lumineers and veneers?

Clearwater Florida Cosmetic and family dentist Dr Jeffrey Ellenberg explains the differences and similarities between Lumineers and porcelain veneers for teeth. Veneers help fix cracked teeth, chipped teeth, broken teeth, teeth gaps, teeth discoloration, crooked teeth.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers a type of veneer.  Lumineers are thinner than traditional porcelain veneers, require less preparation than veneers, and require little or no removal of the tooth structure.

What are veneers?

Veneers are also known as “dental porcelain laminates.” Veneers are wafer-thin shells that bond to teeth. They are permanent and custom-shaped. Veneers require removing roughly .5 mm of the original tooth to allow space for the new veneer.

What are the similarities between Lumineers and veneers?

  • Both Lumineers and veneers are made of thin, durable porcelain. (Lumineers are thinner than veneers)
  • Both Lumineers and veneers cover only the visible portions of teeth
  • Both Lumineers and veneers repair minor tooth imperfections
  • Both Lumineers and veneers straighten and lengthen teeth
  • Both Lumineers and veneers are stain proof, natural in appearance and highly resilient.
  • Both Lumineers and veneers conceal stained or discolored fillings and poor cosmetic-bonding jobs
  • Both Lumineers and veneers cover discolored teeth, including those darkened by a root canal, physical trauma and staining

When do Lumineers work best?

Lumineers work best for small cosmetic jobs such as:

  • Extending small teeth
  • Fixing a minor chip
  • Adjusting/ changing the color of an existing tooth.
