Dental Braces

There are many types of dental braces now available, including:
- Metal dental braces: Made of stainless steel. Metal dental braces can stain the surface of the teeth.
- Ceramic or clear dental braces: They are less visible and look more natural than metal braces. Ceramic dental braces do not stain, however they require a longer treatment time.
- Gold dental braces: Same as traditional metal dental braces, but made of gold-plated steel. There are no advantages to using gold over steel, except for aesthetic appeal.
- Lingual dental braces: Lingual dental braces are placed on the inside of the teeth. The biggest drawback of lingual braces is that they can be uncomfortable and result in cuts and sores in your tongue.
- Invisalign® dental braces: Invisalign braces are practically invisible, and can be removed for eating and brushing your teeth. Invisalign braces are computer-designed, and must be changed every two weeks, since they are made of clear plastic and cannot be adjusted.
How do dental braces work?
Brackets are attached to each tooth, and can even be attached to the back of the tooth to make them less noticeable. Brackets may be made of metal, ceramic, plastic or a combination of these materials. Some brackets are clear or tooth-colored. There are brackets shaped like hearts and footballs, and elastics (orthodontic rubber bands) in a wide variety of colors. There are also gold-plated braces and glow-in-the-dark braces.
