A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth, covering the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and/or to improve its appearance.

Dental crowns fully encase the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line and help to preserve the functionality of damaged or decayed teeth. Dental crowns may be used to protect a cracked tooth, restore functionality of a tooth with excessive decay, or replace a pre-existing crown.

During a dental crown procedure, Dr. Ellenberg prepares your tooth and makes a molded impression of the teeth to send to a dental laboratory for use in final restoration. A fitted, temporary crown is created during this visit to temporarily protect the tooth. At a future visit, the crown is permanently cemented.
