Office Visits
Your First Visit
During your first visit to our office, Dr. Ellenberg will be performing a thorough examination. To accurately evaluate the health of your entire mouth, we will be taking a full series of radiographs. These X-rays allow the doctor to view the position of your teeth, structure of your jaw, check for teeth that have not yet fully erupted, malformed roots, as well as abscesses, cysts, growths, or tumors. It will also allow him to view all existing dental restorations, check for gum or periodontal disease, and tooth decay. Dr. Ellenberg will also be performing an oral cancer screening as twenty-five percent of oral cancers occur in people who don’t smoke and have no other risk factors.
The initial visit also involves reviewing your medical history. When completing your medical history, please be sure to provide complete, up-to-date information. Inform Dr. Ellenberg of recent hospital stays, surgeries, or recent illness. Also include the names, doses, and frequency of all medications you are taking, whether prescription or over-the-counter products. The name and phone number of your physician(s) will also be necessary. The American Medical Association is working with dentists to educate patients regarding the link between medical and dental health.
Regular Checkups
We encourage regular dental checkups for patients starting at age three. It is valuable to have a checkup every six months to:
- Check for problems that you might not see or feel
- Detect early signs of decay
- Treat oral health problems early, while they are still manageable
Regular checkups include cleaning, polishing, oral cancer screening, and an oral exam by Dr. Ellenberg. During the oral exam, the doctor evaluates the health of your mouth, teeth, gums and tongue. He also checks fillings and other dental restorations. Constant pressure from chewing, grinding or clenching can cause them to wear away, chip or crack. Treatment, if needed, is then recommended to restore your mouth to good health. The oral exam also gives you the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding your oral health. Exams and cleanings are by appointment only, so please contact our office today to schedule your next dental visit.
